As the heart of any good unit, a Tank knows their duty and strength lie at the front lines of the fray. All around them, the battle ebbs and flows with the steady beating of that heart. While some may channel essence to create fire or summon ethereal beings, Tanks manipulate essence to gird their bodies and reshape the battlefield. Against an unstoppable force, the Tank becomes an immovable object, with essence binding them to the earth. Tanks can pull at the threads of an opponent’s mind, manipulating their emotions and goading them into devastating tactical mistakes.[1]

Tank is an archetype in Ashes of Creation.[2]

Protection. Command. Execution. Tanks act as a shield for themselves and their party, altering the battlefield to execute their strategy. A mastery of focus and control allow Tanks to achieve their primary goals - helping their team mitigate incoming damage, and dictating who stands in the line of fire.[1]

As a Tank sharpens their skills and learns to steel themselves against danger, they will find their strength growing in a variety of ways.[1]

Tanks will have different build options:[3]

  • Evasion tanks
  • Control tanks
  • Shield tanks

The game hosts a wide array of progression paths, and some of those paths will grant additional paths to augmenting your threat generation. This can be in the form of enchantments and stats ... and even in the form of augments granted from societies and religions. Gear and skills choice are also a big component.[4]Steven Sharif

All classes with Tank as primary archetype will be viable for tanking upper-end raids.[5]

You will need a tank more or less depending on what's happening in the environment. Certainly in dungeons you will need a tank. I don't picture us creating any encounters that wouldn't need that sort of control. Now we're not just focused on aggro in terms of control and managing mobs... It's not just about mitigating damage, although that's a part of the sort of calculus there, but it's also about making sure that the mobs are doing what you want them to do.[6]Джеффри Бард

Background

From a tank perspective, why did I name the tank "tank"? There's a few reasons: One is that there are obviously elements of the tank role that could be considered as different types of names like, Guardian or Steward or whatever. There's things that you could do that but I feel like tank as a vernacular has become embedded within MMO/fantasy players and they use it interchangeably even if the class name was like Guardian or whatever. I feel even though in that scenario players would still refer to it as a tank like in normal conversation with each other, "Oh we need a tank for this fight."[7]Steven Sharif

Javelin Javelin Icon.jpg Pulls a target enemy to your location.[8][9][10][11] Deals damage and generates a great amount of threat.[8][11] Reduces cooldown by 5 seconds.[8][11]
Lacerate Lacerate Icon.jpg Pierce your enemy, dealing instant damage and causing them to bleed for additional damage over time.[12][9][13][14] Increased bleed duration. If the target is bleeding from previous Lacerate, explode remaining bleed damage as instant damage.[12][14] Hitting an enemy with Lacerate already under its bleed effect will consume the bleed and deal 50% of the remaining damage instantly.[12][14]
Myrmidon's Fury Myrmidon Icon.jpg Strike your target and gain a temporary buff that gives you a chance to counterattack each time you are struck.[15][9][16][17] Increased chance to counterattack.[15][17] Increased damage mitigation during the buff's duration.[15][17]
Onslaught Onslaught Icon.jpg Charge and deal damage to your target.[18][9][19][20] Reduce the target's attack damage temporarily.[18][20] Knock down the target.[18][20]
Resounding Smash Resounding Smash Icon.jpg Strikes in front of you, then deal additional damage after a short delay to any targets that were initially struck.[21][9][22][23] The delayed hit deals additional damage.[21][23] The delayed hit returns mana to yourself.[21][23]
Shockwave Shockwave Icon.jpg Strike the ground with your weapon, dealing damage to enemies in front of you and leaving a fiery patch of earth that continually deals damage to enemies in the area over its duration.[24][9][25][26] The fiery patch left behind deals additional damage.[24][26] Slows enemies standing in the area.[24][26]
Ultimate Defense Ultimate Defense Icon.jpg Become immune to damage for 3 seconds.[27][9][28][29] Duration is increased to 5 seconds.[29] Grant damage mitigation to all party members.[29]
Weapon Toss Weapon Toss Icon.jpg Throw your weapon at a target.[30][9][31][14] Bounces to two additional enemies.[30][14] Explodes upon hitting the final target, dealing damage to enemies in the area.[30][14]

Health Regeneration Health Regeneration.png Generate an additional 1.5% of your maximum health per second.[33]

Maximum Health Maximum Health.png Increase maximum health by 75.[33]

Aggro

Aggro (Threat/Hate) will matter in the game.[36]

  • Aggro is based on a hate table.[36]

Siege abilities

If eight Tank archetypes each use one of their summon wall abilities it might construct a larger wall that can divide two raids in a moment; and would require damage and block skills and abilities for a momentary lapse of battle between those two raids.[40]Steven Sharif

Shields

Shields are a type of weapon in Ashes of Creation.[41]

  • Shields in the MMORPG grant a static defense/damage mitigation value.[42]
  • Shields may also offer additional value/block chances on a directional basis.[42]
  • Shields cannot be dual wielded.[43][44]

Timeline

The Tank archetype is scheduled for release in Alpha-1.[45]
